The 4Cs explained
- Cut — how well the diamond is faceted; the biggest driver of sparkle.
- Colour — graded D (colourless) to Z; near-colourless (G-H) offers great value.
- Clarity — the fewer the inclusions, the higher the grade; VS1-VS2 look flawless to the eye.
- Carat — the weight; price rises sharply at round-number milestones.
Certification
Insist on an independent certificate (IGI, GIA) and check that the certificate number is laser-inscribed on the girdle. For studded gold jewellery, confirm the gold is BIS-hallmarked too.
