Why hallmarking matters

BIS hallmarking certifies the purity of gold jewellery. Since the phased rollout of mandatory hallmarking, every hallmarked piece must carry a unique HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number.

What to look for

  • The BIS logo — a triangular mark.

  • The purity/fineness grade, e.g. 22K916 for 22-karat gold.

  • The six-digit alphanumeric HUID.

Verify the HUID

Use the BIS CARE app to enter the HUID and confirm the jeweller, purity and testing centre. If the details do not match the invoice, walk away.

Always insist on a tax invoice that states the gross weight, net weight, purity and making charges separately.
