What are making charges?
Making charges are the labour and craftsmanship cost of turning raw gold into a finished ornament. They are charged either as a flat rate per gram or as a percentage of the gold value.
How they are calculated
Final price = (gold rate x net weight) + making charges + GST. Intricate, handcrafted pieces carry higher making charges than machine-made designs.
Tips to save
- Compare per-gram vs percentage pricing.
- Ask for a break-up of gold value, making charges and stone charges.
- Watch for wastage charges — many jewellers have phased these out.
