Speaking at the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) panel on Reshaping Value Across the Natural Diamond Supply Chain, organised in collaboration with the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong (DFHK) during the Jewellery & Gem WORLD (JGW) Hong Kong Jewellery Show, World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) President Mehul Shah called for industry-wide unity, standardisation, and proactive consumer protection.
Reaffirming the WFDB's commitment to preserving the integrity, trust, and emotional resonance of natural diamonds, Shah outlined strategic initiatives designed to safeguard the industry for future generations.
A Call for a Global Authenticity Mark
A central theme of Shah's address was the need for a universally recognised symbol of trust for natural diamonds:
Shah said the global natural diamond industry needs a common identity that consumers can trust, calling for a globally registered authenticity mark for natural diamonds
He proposed a standardised grading system, drawing a comparison to the Woolmark symbol, which became the trusted global marker for pure wool
"Just as Woolmark became the trusted symbol for pure wool, natural diamonds deserve a globally registered mark. Every genuine natural diamond should carry the right to use this mark," Shah said
He also raised concerns over inconsistencies between laboratory grading systems, noting that these differences can create confusion among consumers trying to assess authenticity and quality
Value Addition and Creative Branding as a Strategic Pillar
Shah outlined value addition as one of the key strategic pillars for the industry's future:
Value Addition & Creative Branding: The industry must move beyond selling diamonds as commodities to creating greater value through branding, innovation, jewellery design, craftsmanship, and storytelling
Shah urged trade members to "sell the art, not merely the paint, canvas, or brush," emphasising that jewellery must become an expression of emotion, artistry, and enduring desire, rather than simply a transaction involving raw materials
Concluding his address, Shah extended a warm invitation to members of the Hong Kong trade to attend the upcoming India International Jewellery Show (IIJS) in Mumbai.
